The retail giant Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during a single visit. This policy was activated starting November 5th, according to a company memo shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, because the restriction is based on individual trips, theoretically a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
To most players, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings indicate premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.
Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for true fans and everyday enthusiasts as well.
