The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
