Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Squad

The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Seamers

The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely decision.

Alternative Choices Weighed

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.

In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
