Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through the situation."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
