Larian Studios Explains Its Use of Machine Learning for Upcoming Project

The developer behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its new project, generating significant hype within the industry. However, follow-up statements from the studio's co-founder have added nuance to the discussion, addressing the developer's philosophy toward machine learning.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a latest message, Swen Vincke detailed that the developer is utilizing generative AI for particular preliminary purposes. These involve enhancing presentation materials, producing rough visual ideas, and writing temporary text.

Notably, Vincke emphasized that the end material in the game will be authored exclusively by human writers. "Our team is writing every line manually," he stated.

Larian is constantly expanding our team of concept artists and are actively forming dedicated writer rooms.

As concept art is being particularly mentioned — we currently have 23 visual developers and have positions available for more talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and focused on letting our team spend additional energy on the creative process.

Every AI system applied correctly is additive to a artist's workflow, not a replacement for their craft.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The revelation of AI usage initially generated unease among a segment of the player base. In response, Vincke provided more clarification on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to explore references, in the same way we use search engines and physical media," he explained. "During the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then swap out with authentic illustrations."

He added, "Larian brings on artists for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a machine suggests."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's practical method to AI and ML, categorizing its use into key functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using tools to quickly build rough mock-ups of mechanics to validate concepts prior to full production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could in the future create new forms of player agency, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly noted that central narrative domains — like writing — are are in no way areas where the company is replacing creative input. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these very roles.

"Larian is neither releasing a game with machine-made assets, nor planning on reducing creatives to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
