I believed I nicked it - Alex Carey on overturned decision.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he thought he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System on day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test versus the English.

After surviving on 72, Carey crafted a fine 106 to help the Australians post 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had detected an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After captain Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the replay reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike however this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he believed there was a space between bat and ball.

As a result, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Technology Debate

Questions have been raised about 'Snicko'' throughout the Ashes contest after a several unclear calls.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may escalate this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker remarked.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."

Emotional Century

His hundred was his maiden in the Ashes.

It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," stated Carey.

"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm fighting back the tears. It was a fantastic feeling."

Not New to Furore

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a heated final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he continued: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."

"Maybe it went my way."
