From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Appears Distinct Yet Evolves Familiar Concepts.
Bruce Straley behind a legendary franchise is making his return to video games. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the inaugural effort from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on the legacy he helped create with a focus on characters that learn and adapt.
A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure
Unveiled during a major gaming event, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a narrative-driven exploration title. The game follows an elderly witch, a character who subverts conventional action-game archetypes. This central concept stemmed from a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist.
"Consider a scenario where you were without the sword or shield? What if you were somehow encumbered? An aging witch, for instance?" mused Straley. "I thought it was deeply interesting to think about the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about fighting your way through problems, but also encompasses dedication, resolve, and tenacity."
Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction
Although this project looks different visually, its core innovation is a direct continuation the character dynamics pioneered in The Last of Us. The entire project sprang from a key thought: "What if I could make Ellie truly living and learning to the player?"
Your strange critter partner in the game transcends typical AI behavior. It is essentially a curious child that reacts with evolving behaviors. To begin with, it explores with wonder, resulting in silly antics. Next, it moves into a mimicry phase. Ultimately, it watches and learns grasping cause and effect.
- For example: If the creature sees Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it learns the motion but not the reason.
- It will then begin grabbing various things to see where they go, copying the action.
- The 'why' is learned only when it accidentally solves an obstacle, forming an organic connection.
Where Every Playthrough Differs
This complex system aims to foster a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that this project functions as a contemplative journey of exploration as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.
"Each effort to insert traditional three-act structure within this framework, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters stems from how each individual player will inevitably create unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."
This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, Coven of the Chicken Foot signifies both an evolution and a drastic departure from Straley's well-known franchises. The game remains in development for PC platforms.
