News has broken that beloved stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their iconic roles in the latest chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is currently in production.

A Significant Reunion for Fans

The actors are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the characters they made famous. Speculation suggests their roles will probably be featured in a flash-forward sequence, considering the main film series concluded with their characters living in peace.

This marks the sixth film in the global Hunger Games franchise.

Delving Into the Prequel

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a 2025 novel by series creator Suzanne Collins. It will be the second prequel film after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Returning to the director's chair is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed the majority of the previous films in the series.

A New Era in Panem

The film's narrative are set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, centering on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, who would later become Katniss's mentor, is portrayed as a tribute in the notorious 50th Hunger Games.

The cast also includes several notable actors in key parts:

• Jesse Plemons steps into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes takes on the part of a younger version of the calculating President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for a Golden Globe for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson stars in the sequel to the successful franchise Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the filming timeline:
